Trips that brighten the spirit

Dementia initially caused concern but doesn’t stop Marie now.
With a recent dementia diagnosis, we first met Marie late last year. Her two sons had been advised by an Admiral Dementia Nurse that she would benefit from professional care at home. According to Nick, Richard did the research and Angel Carers came out on top.
Both sons live a distance from Marie – Nick in Bristol and Richard in Southampton. So, they wanted to ensure their mum got the specialist care she needs and for her not be left on her own. She didn’t need cooking and cleaning as she is still quite agile but, with dementia, she does get confused so needed Angel Carers to ensure she takes the correct medications at the right time. But perhaps more importantly, being slightly out of town and not being able to drive now with her dementia diagnosis, she needed human interaction and engagement.
Sarah the Carer
Angels put together a package of care and in stepped ‘Sarah the Carer’, one of our experienced dementia carers. Sarah has worked with dementia patients for over 10 years and has been with Angel Carers for three, ever since she moved down from Farnborough to Dorset.
“I really enjoy working for Angels, they are so supportive of me. And I love where I work in Bridport and especially being by the sea,” Sarah shares.
As she mentions, “Everyone’s dementia journey is different. It’s incredibly frustrating for people to lose their mind and their grip on reality.” Part of Marie’s package of care includes daily care from our team and a weekly social visit. For this, whenever the weather permits, Sarah gets Marie out of the house, whether that’s for a trip to Morrisons, to ensure she has the basics, or a trip to the beach.
As Sarah states, “Marie loves being outside and loves our company. I’ve seen a real pick-up in her well-being because of our trips and visits.”
Marie starting Line Dancing again!
As Nick comments,
“Mum is super excited to be getting out of the house again.
She suffers from depression, and we noticed that after the dementia diagnosis she was getting closed off and shut down at being so isolated. With Angel Carers we’ve seen a huge improvement. She is bright and engaged and looks forward to every visit. She often talks about the chats she’s having with the carers but she’s particularly happy on the days she’s been out”
Line dancing has been a passion of Marie’s for over 20 years, and she joined the Bridport group shortly before her diagnosis. Here she thrived not only on the dancing but the also social aspects of going for coffee afterwards. Her diagnosis meant she could no longer attend and see her friends.
Nick continues, “We now have an arrangement with Angel Carers to start taking her to Line Dancing every Friday then one of her friends will drop her home. She is so excited to be going back! Mum is so much more engaged in life and the dancing eases her arthritis as well. We can’t thank Angel Carers enough for all the tailored support they are giving her.”
